It has been said by many management and leadership gurus that “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. In another way, people need you to pay attention and care about their interests.
When it comes to networking we need to build strong foundation of trust with people. People like to talk about themselves; giving them the time to tell their own stories is more likely to result in a genuine connection. Here are five good questions to ask in your first conversation with a new person.
- What do you like most about what you do?
- What led you into that field?
- Where else do you network?
- What are some of your biggest challenges?
- How can I help you?
These five questions are adapted from an interview of Dr. Ivan Misner, Founder of BNI. You can listen to his interview and read the full transcript at http://www.bnipodcast.com/
